US — A Standford University researcher has discovered a method by which websites – and potentially advertisers – could track online behaviour using a unique fingerprint created by mobile device accelerometers.
Hristo Bojinov told SFGate how mobile browsers could theoretically measure the tiniest defects in the sensors within devices that detect movement.
It’s these defects that produce “a unique set of numbers that advertisers could exploit to identify and track most smartphones,” according to the report.
Bojinov and colleagues have created a website, Sensor-ID.com, that allows phone owners to run the experiment themselves.
