US— IBM has part-funded the launch of a new data analysis centre at DePaul University in Chicago.
Students at the new Center for Data Mining and Predictive Analytics will be offered a Masters in predictive analytics, which the partners claim is the first of its kind in the country.
Deepak Advani (pictured), vice president of predictive analytics at IBM said: “As analytics goes mainstream, organisations realise that smart and accomplished professionals fluent in this knowledge are critical to their success. IBM and DePaul University share the vision that educating students in the application of predictive analytics will advance careers and create leadership opportunities in tomorrow’s workforce.”
Suzanne Fogel, chair of the marketing department at DePaul University added: “Predictive analytics is providing new job opportunities for students entering the workforce in all areas of business. The new Center for Data Mining and Predictive Analytics is an investment in an area that is greatly in-demand by organisations worldwide.”
IBM’s involvement in the centre, which will open in October, follows its acquisition of analytics firms Coremetrics earlier this week and SPSS and RedPill Solutions last year.

It's well known that the nation's first Master of Science in Analytics was established in 2007 at North Carolina State University's Institute for Advanced Analytics (analytics,ncsu.edu). It's nice to see DePaul join the club, but claiming to be first is utter nonsense.
