US — 53% of men plan to shop in-store this Black Friday ( 28 November), compared to 50% of women.
A quarter of consumers intend to carry out their first Black Friday store visits this year, comprising 29% of men and 22% of women. This is according to research carried out among 1,150 18+ consumers by Nielsen.
Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the US, and traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Most major US retailers open early and offer promotional sales. Many online retailers also offer Black Friday discounts.
According to the Nielsen report, the top Black Friday destinations are department stores ( 56%), discount stores/ mass merchandisers ( 55%), electronic stores ( 49%), online ( 40%) and toy stores ( 26%).
The Monday following Black Friday has come to be known as Cyber Monday, as it is a popular day for online Christmas shopping. The Nielsen report suggests that slightly more shoppers ( 55%) plan to shop on Cyber Monday this year than Black Friday. More women ( 60%) than men ( 50%) intend to shop online that day, according to the report.
