New cabinet announced following UK general election

UK – A new cabinet has been appointed in the wake of Thursday’s general election, with Lisa Nandy named culture secretary and Peter Kyle appointed secretary of state for science, innovation and technology.

Nandy is the Labour MP for Wigan, having first been elected in 2010, and was previously shadow international development minister, as well as prior roles as shadow foreign secretary and shadow secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities.

Kyle is MP for Hove and Portslade, having been first elected in 2015, and had prior roles as shadow minister for victims and youth justice, shadow minister for schools, and shadow Northern Ireland secretary.

Jonathan Reynolds, Labour (Co-op) MP for Stalybridge and Hyde since 2010, has also been named secretary of state for business and trade, and president of the Board of Trade.

The appointments follow Labour’s landslide election victory on Thursday 4th July, with the party winning 411 seats in parliament and Keir Starmer becoming prime minister.

Other senior appointments in the first Labour cabinet since 2010 included Rachel Reeves as the first female chancellor of the exchequer in the more than 800-year history of the role, as well as David Lammy as foreign secretary and Yvette Cooper as home secretary.
